Jefferson County Imposed Pergatory

Today I found something very interesting. The employees that have been placed on ALWOP are stuck in a County imposed pergatory. If you have been placed on ALWOP and decide to resign from the County in an effort to get your sick and/or vacation money to supplement your income you may be denied unemployment by the State of Alabama. Why? Because you are resigning from a job. Yes, Although we are on ALWOP, receiving unemployment and NOT working , in the eyes of the State of Alabama - we still have a job. WTH!!!! We are given unemployment and we can keep our insurance benefits IF WE PAY OUR PREMIUMS, but we are ineligible for job training programs, can be denied assistance from local agencies. The County is not offering any assistance to the employees that have been placed on ALWOP because we still have a job.

The following was posted on the FRIENDS OF JEFFERSON COUNTY Facebook page:

O.K Ya'll this is a answer that I got from David Carrington when I ask what was being done to get the employees back to work: ("David Carrington: Bonnie, the Commission is unable to fix the revenue shortfall caused by the Legislature, who will need to un-earmark funds, pass a replacement revenue or some combination of both. Honestly, some employees will probably not return no matter what happens or doesn't happen in the Legislature.")

And employee made the following comment:

Which translates to: the commission is unable to fix it's money woes caused by mismanagement of the past and present commissioner's, who are over their heads and have no idea what to do. Honestly, we laid off a lot of folks that actually wo...rked, but we prefer having useless departments and too many managers. We really wish everyone that is laid off would just quit. Ultimately, that is the first step in resolving this issue.

The County returned the hourly employees that remained after the ALWOP back to 40 hours a week. Now the Sheriff is returning his employees back to 40 hours a week. The letter that was given to us when we were placed on ALWOP does not have a return to work date, so you don't know if you are going to be called back by the County. But if you listen to the Courthouse 'gossip' and watch the news, there is every indication that the County is looking to lay off more people instead of calling those that have been laid off back to work. They are planning for life without us.
